In this world of ‘natural’ products, many of which push what the definition of natural to the other side of the sun, Two Guys in Vermont soups truly mean business. You get soups with locally sourced organic ingredients, which I recently had the pleasure of trying. The tasting included all three of their (current) flavors: Chunky Garden Tomato, Hearty Curried Apple Butternut Squash and Veggie Basil Goodness. First, I’ll start by saying that I am no longer wooed by packaging alone. However, when I saw the glass, 16oz filled jars of soups, they made me take pause. What? No Bisphenol A with my broth? Okay, now you have my attention.
Through the glass you can see the product, which in the case of Two Guys is a good thing. The rich, warm natural colors sell themselves. The labels are simple and straight to the point – you are getting a local product with organic fresh ingredients, and they sounded really good. Temptation building! You can even eat it right out of the jar if you are hungry – pop open the top and dig in! Now I’m in trouble. Will this make it to the stove? Before heating I did give it a try. It’s not bad, but I must admit heating simply brought out the taste on all three. It only took a couple of minutes to warm. My only warning is to read the label: the ingredients are fresh and do settle, so you must give it a shake before pouring your portion out in the pan. All three flavors had a pleasing taste, with subtle balanced herbs complimenting the veggies. I was especially drawn to the Chunky Garden Tomato as I’m a sucker for tomato and fennel together. It was a darn good cup of tomato soup, and I went back for seconds. I added a pinch of course black pepper – I like a bit more kick. Of the three it was the only soup with dairy, so if you follow a vegan diet you will be quiet pleased with the Hearty Curried Apple Butternut Squash and Veggie Basil Goodness. Both have good flavor, although I found the Hearty Curried Apple Butternut Squash ‘thin’ in consistency. I was tempted to pour it over rice.
I would definitely go back again and grab a glass jar of this soup. It’s great to have on hand whenever you want to feed the soul with simply good stuff. And it’s nice to know you are actually getting what you thought you paid for… something truly natural. Ingredients are sourced from Champlain Orchards, Monument Farms, Pete’s Greens, Elmer Farm, Dog River Farm, Rockville Market Farm, Joe Czajkowski Farm, Blackwell Roots Farm and Olivia’s Garden.
